The Fragment
Written in deep green ink on handmade cotton paper.
The fibres soften the page; the words do not.
This fragment knows that restraint is not the absence of force. It is force that knows exactly where to land.
Make fewer moves.
Let each one know why it is there.

The Visible Thread
There is a moment in the making
when another word
would make the work smaller.
Another flourish
would blur the edge.
Another gesture
would exist only
to prove the hand was there.
So the hand stops.
The blade has already found
the place where pressure matters.
[…]
Restraint is not silence.
It is the refusal
to spend force carelessly.
The practised hand
does not make fewer movements
because it knows less.
It makes fewer movements
because each one
has learned its purpose.
And when the work
has found its shape,
leave it.
Reflections from the Weaver
There is something in Baltasar Gracián’s restraint that I recognise.
Still, I do not believe brevity is inherently wiser, or that every thought should be sharpened into an aphorism. Some ideas need room. Some meanings need layers. I am hardly innocent of giving them both.
What interests me is deliberate economy.
Gracián understood that language acquires force not only through what we put into it, but through what we are willing to leave out. His writing can feel honed rather than diminished by compression.
That distinction matters to me.
When I am making something well, there comes a point when I can feel that it has found the best shape I am capable of giving it at that time. The movements become efficient. The words stop fighting their places. Effort remains, but it becomes contained and poised.
And then I stop.
That is a form of rigour.
