[The Ache of Almost-Treasures] – LF#2505019

The Fragment

A fragment inked on handmade cotton paper, written hastily in red ink and sealed in red wax.
It carries the ache of denied wonder, and the slow rebirth of choice.
It may be:

  • A charm against false longing
  • A spell of discernment
  • A mirror for the moment you could choose

Not all hunger is greed.
Some of it is the soul learning what to reach for.

Reflections from the Weaver

As a child, I learned to look away.
Not because I didn’t want, but because wanting hurt.
If you can’t have it, don’t reach.
If you can’t reach it, don’t look.

And so I taught my eyes to pass over beautiful things.
To flinch from allure. To admire quietly and move on.

Later, I could choose.
I had means, I had agency,
and for a while, I tried to fill the hunger.

But when I brought the objects home, they dulled.
Under close scrutiny, the sparkle flattened.
The thrill dissolved into ownership.

For a time, I declared all objects hollow.
Function only. No enchantment.

But that, too, was a kind of forgetting.

Now, I search carefully.
Not for more—but for the one.
The pen I’ll always reach for.
The dress that sings.
The pair of earrings that feel like a sigil.
Not minimalism. Not rejection. Just… discernment.

This fragment holds both grief and agency.
The kind of grief that forms when a child learns not to want,
and the kind of agency that arises when you choose to want well.

It’s about enchantment, loss, and the discernment of desire.
About not rushing to reject beauty just because it once hurt to long for it.

I’ve learned that I don’t want many things.
I want right things.
The ones that hum when I touch them.
The ones that feel like they recognize me too.
