[The Flame Was the Sitting I] – LF#2506045

The Fragment

Written in burnt-orange ink on cream cardstock, the colour of a fire after the brightness has settled into heat.

A fireside fragment about the difference between witnessing a moment and stepping outside it to watch yourself having one.

The Flamekeeper is already seated.

Nothing needs to be solved before the fire can be felt.

Some moments disappear the instant you climb above them to understand them.
Come back down. The fire is still warm.

The Visible Thread

The Flamekeeper
has no lecture prepared.

She has a fire.

That is enough.

Sit.

At first,
the mind still reaches
for its instruments.

What does this mean?

Why does this soothe me?

What am I noticing?

Am I present yet?

And there—

almost invisibly—

the moment changes.

I am no longer only
beside the fire.

I am somewhere above myself,
watching a person
sit beside a fire,

taking notes
on whether she is doing it correctly.

The wood cracks.

Heat reaches my hands.

A small orange edge
folds itself around the log.

None of it waits
for my interpretation.

[…]

And something in me
returns to ground level.

There is still awareness.

There is still attention.

But no little figure
standing outside the moment
holding a clipboard.

The warmth is warm.

The crackle is sound.

My body is here
before I turn it
into evidence of being here.

Nothing has been solved.

Nothing needs to be.

For a while,
the Flamekeeper tends the fire

and I let the experience
finish happening
before I ask it
what it meant.

Reflections from the Weaver

There is a part of me I call the Flamekeeper.

She is the part that lives.

Not the part that explains living, records it, analyses it, or watches from somewhere slightly above. She is the one who feels her hands warming beside the fire.

I need her because I am remarkably good at leaving.

Not physically.

I can be having an experience and, almost without noticing, step outside it. I begin watching myself experience it. Measuring it. Naming it. Wondering whether I am sufficiently present.

Useful things happen when I’m observing the world like that.

A great deal of my thinking comes from there.

But something is also lost when I live there too long.

The experience continues without waiting for its observer.

This fragment is where the Flamekeeper’s fire meets something I recognise in Dōgen.

Dōgen’s shikantaza—“just sitting”—is not neatly reducible to modern ideas about mindfulness or simply “being in the present.” More importantly for this fragment, his writing resists treating practice merely as an instrument for obtaining something afterward. In Dōgen’s account, practice and realization are not two separate events in which we first perform the correct procedure and later receive the reward. The practice itself matters as enactment.

That idea catches on something in me.

I am accustomed to asking what an experience is for.

What did I learn?

What changed?

What mechanism produced this feeling?

How does it fit into the larger system?

Those are often excellent questions.

But occasionally the question becomes a way of stepping out of the answer while it is still happening.

Sometimes sitting beside the fire is not preparation for the meaningful event.

It is the event.

The Flamekeeper understands this more easily than I do.

She does not object to reflection. She knows I will return to it soon enough.

She simply reminds me that reflection requires something to reflect upon.

First there has to be a life.

A moment actually inhabited.

A body allowed to register what is happening before the mind converts it into structure.
